The pretty painted egg
cracked open with ease
as the toddler’s grip
-too firm-
set it amongst the others
in the glorious basket
of the elegant table setting
Now-
a messy yolk
not one of yellow harmony
but of discord and disdain
tarnished the beauty of the others…
dripping
messy
-a mixture of tears-
His fellow inmate
-having lived in the cold cell next to him for days-
had bragged:
“I’m stronger and firmer
I just won’t crack-
you’ll see”
And sure enough
it was true
but what the pretty one
failed to say at that moment
was that
“beauty, my dear,
will only get you so far.”
“Don’t let your brains get boiled away.”
Oh wow. This is great. A whole story told from the viewpoint of an imprisoned egg. And in the end, a lesson for everyone. I love it!
